Une étude montre que le cerveau change radicalement après 40 ans

Ce n’est un secret pour personne : à partir d’un certain âge, le cerveau n’est plus ce qu’il était. On devient plus lent, on se sent plus facilement dépassé, et les jeunes générations semblent vivre sur une longueur d’onde totalement différente.

7 heures de sommeil. C’est la durée idéale pour un sommeil réparateur chez les personnes de plus de 40 ans. Selon les chercheurs ayant mené une étude sur la quantité de sommeil de 50 000 participants, les personnes dormant 7 heures par nuit présentent une santé mentale préservée. Explications.

7 heures par nuit, ni plus ni moins

Dans ce contexte, des chercheurs de l’université de Cambridge (Royaume-Uni) et de Fudan (Chine) ont mené une étude de large ampleur. En effet, ils ont interrogé 50 000 personnes, âgées de 38 à 73 ans, sur leurs habitudes de sommeil, leur santé mentale et leur état de santé général. Les participants ont également réalisé des tests cognitifs, génétiques et leurs images cérébrales ont été analysées.

Les résultats de l’étude mettent en évidence que les personnes qui dorment 7 heures par nuit présentent de meilleures aptitudes aux tests cognitifs. Notamment, ces participants ont une meilleure vitesse de traitement de l’information, attention visuelle, mémoire et capacité à résoudre des problèmes. Par ailleurs, ils présentent moins de signes anxiodepressif que les autres participants. L’étude montre également que des durées de sommeil inférieures ou supérieures à 7 heures sont associées à un déclin cognitif.

Les auteurs soulignent qu’un sommeil réparateur est d’autant plus crucial lorsqu’on vieillit. En effet, il permet de maintenir la santé mentale. Aussi, chez les patients souffrant de troubles psychiatriques ou de démences, un bon sommeil limite le déclin cognitif.
