Sénégal : Anta Babacar Ngom, première candidate à la présidentielle

Anta Babacar Ngom, chef d’entreprise de 40 ans, est la voix des femmes et des jeunes, groupes durement touchés par les difficultés économiques du pays, le chômage généralisé et la hausse des prix.

La seule femme candidate à l’élection présidentielle du Sénégal a peu de chances de l’emporter lors des élections de dimanche, mais les militants affirment que sa seule présence contribue à faire avancer une campagne de plusieurs décennies visant à instaurer l’égalité des sexes dans ce pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest.

Anta Babacar Ngom, chef d’entreprise de 40 ans, est la voix des femmes et des jeunes, groupes durement touchés par les difficultés économiques du pays, le chômage généralisé et la hausse des prix. Elle a promis de créer des millions d’emplois et une banque pour les femmes afin de soutenir leur indépendance économique.

« Notre pays a un potentiel énorme. Les ressources naturelles sont là, et elles peuvent être développées », a-t-elle déclaré à l’Associated Press lors d’une récente interview. « Les jeunes filles que je rencontre me demandent mon soutien. Elles le font parce qu’elles savent que lorsqu’une femme arrivera au pouvoir, elle mettra fin à leurs souffrances. Je ne vais pas les oublier ».

Peu de gens s’attendent à ce que Mme Ngom figure parmi les principaux candidats à la présidence, mais les militants affirment que le fait qu’une femme se soit lancée dans la course à la présidence pour la première fois depuis des années montre que les femmes progressent dans la lutte pour l’égalité.

« Nous devons être présentes, même si nous n’avons aucune chance », a déclaré Selly Ba, militante et sociologue. « Nous n’avons aucune chance dans ces élections. Mais il est important que nous ayons des femmes candidates, des femmes qui sont dans la course ».

Mme Ngom est la première femme à se présenter à l’élection présidentielle depuis plus de dix ans, ce qui témoigne de la lenteur frustrante des progrès accomplis aux yeux des activistes, qui affirment que les jeunes sont revenus à des conceptions plus traditionnelles du rôle des femmes dans la société.

Les divergences de vues sur l’évolution des valeurs et des normes traditionnelles apparaissent sur les médias sociaux. Des comptes populaires, souvent des Sénégalais postés de l’étranger où la liberté d’expression est plus grande, débattent de sujets tabous tels que les relations sexuelles avant le mariage et la question de savoir si la polygamie est juste.

Un utilisateur de TikTok, qui se fait appeler Ngo Keĩta, joue le rôle d’une tante d’agonie populaire, en postant des clips en wolof, la langue la plus parlée au Sénégal. L’un de ces clips, qui a été visionné plus de 2 millions de fois, décrit une querelle amère entre une femme et son mari dans le cadre d’un mariage polygame, et invite les personnes qui le suivent à faire des commentaires.

Certaines jeunes sénégalaises reviennent à la notion traditionnelle de mariage, a déclaré Marième Wone Ly, la première femme à avoir dirigé un parti politique au Sénégal il y a plus de 20 ans.

« Il est essentiel de trouver un équilibre entre l’évolution moderne et le respect de nos coutumes. Les femmes doivent pouvoir s’exprimer sans entrave, tout en préservant notre identité culturelle et en valorisant les valeurs traditionnelles qui ont façonné notre société », a déclaré Mme Ngom à l’AP.

Mme Ngom, qui dirige l’entreprise alimentaire de sa famille, a fait de l’économie un thème central de sa campagne, alors que la plupart des analystes s’accordent à dire qu’il s’agit d’une préoccupation majeure pour la population. Les difficultés économiques ont poussé des milliers de Sénégalais à tenter des voyages dangereux à la recherche d’une vie meilleure en Occident.

Les partisans de Mme Ngom se disent fiers de soutenir une candidate féminine et espèrent un changement avec le prochain gouvernement.

« Nos enfants meurent en mer à cause du chômage et de l’insécurité de l’emploi. Le chômage est endémique. Les femmes sont fatiguées », a déclaré l’activiste Aicha Ba lors d’un récent rassemblement de soutien à Mme Ngom.
