Niger : les USA disent n’avoir toujours pas reçu d’ordre de départ

L’armée américaine compte encore environ 650 soldats et plusieurs centaines de membres du personnel de soutien au Niger, qui a été par le passé une plaque tournante essentielle pour les opérations de lutte contre le terrorisme.

Un haut responsable du Pentagone a déclaré jeudi au Congrès que les États-Unis n’avaient pas reçu de demande officielle de la junte nigérienne de quitter le pays, précisant qu’ils avaient reçu des signaux contradictoires sur la question de savoir si les centaines de soldats américains présents sur place n’étaient plus les bienvenus.

Celeste Wallander, secrétaire d’État adjoint à la Défense pour les affaires de sécurité internationale, a déclaré à la commission des forces armées de la Chambre des représentants que, jusqu’à présent, le conseil militaire au pouvoir au Niger, connu sous le nom de CNSP, n’avait pas demandé officiellement à l’armée américaine de quitter le pays.

Mme Wallander a indiqué que le CNSP avait déclaré que l’accord sur le statut des forces, qui fixe les conditions de la présence militaire américaine dans un pays, était désormais nul et non avenu. Cependant, elle a ajouté que la junte « nous a assuré que les forces militaires américaines étaient protégées et qu’elle ne prendrait aucune mesure susceptible de les mettre en danger ».
